4 Tips for Bringing Your Dog to Your Photography Session
If your dog is anything like mine, the thought of bringing them with you to your photo session sounds like the opposite of fun. They can make your session stressful, and that’s the last thing I want you to feel! But at the end of the day, your dog is a part of your family and if you can’t envision your photos without them, here are some tips on how to make the experience go a little smoother.
1. Take them on a walk beforehand
My NUMBER ONE tip is to take your dog on a walk beforehand. Most dogs (especially large breeds) have a lot of energy and your session is likely their main outing of the day. Plus they’ll be meeting a new person — ME! It’s all so exciting for them. Taking them on a walk or to the dog park before arriving will help take out some of that energy, allow them to relax, and have them be more willing to cooperate.
2. Bring a friend or family member
Sometimes bringing someone along with you to handle your pup can help a lot! Plus, not all your photos will have your pooch in them, so it’s always nice to have your dog taken care of so you can relax with peace of mind while we focus on you. Most of the outdoor locations I take my clients to in Kamloops are public areas. I do have one location I like to go that is off-leash, so if you’re into that, let me know! If you don’t have a family member or friend to bring, or if you’re not comfortable with letting your dog roam freely (in designated off-leash areas), be sure to bring along a leash or rope to tie them up securely.
3. Treats & Toys
If I know you’re bringing your furry friend, I will be sure to bring lots of treats for positive reinforcement (high quality for those sensitive tummies!) It also helps to bring a squeaky toy or something you know will get their attention. This helps me get them looking at the camera.
4. Consider an in-home session
If you know you want a lot of photos with your dog, having an in-home session is a great option. Your dog will be in their own environment and familiar with their surroundings. After the initial energy of someone new coming into your home, your dog will likely be able to relax a lot faster than if we were in a place they haven’t been before.
“Kaeli took some engagement photos of us and our dog. Our pup can be wary of strangers but Kaeli won him over immediately! She made us feel comfortable right away and kept the session really relaxed and fun. Would definitely recommend!”

I am a huge dog person. I know first-hand that they aren’t always on their best behaviour and it can be stressful bringing them to a new place to meet new people. Remember that I’m not here to judge — sometimes our pups don’t cooperate and that’s okay! I will do my absolute best to get at least a few good ones with you and the furriest member of your family. Let’s go have a blast!
