Bringing a toddler to a family photoshoot can be a delightful but challenging experience. As a family photographer, I understand the importance of creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for the whole family, including the little ones. Capturing the beautiful chaos and genuine interactions between family members is what makes these photoshoots unique and memorable. But fear not! Here are five valuable tips to help you prepare for a successful photoshoot with your little one:

1. Choose the right time of day:

Selecting the optimal time for the photoshoot is crucial when working with toddlers. Schedule the session during their preferred time of the day when they are well-rested and in a good mood. Avoid moments close to their nap time or mealtime, as they can become fussy or irritable. I am always very flexible when it comes to booking family sessions with toddlers!

2. Comfort is key:

Ensuring your toddler is comfortable during the photoshoot is essential. Dress them in clothes that are easy to move around in and match the theme or location of the shoot. Avoid scratchy fabrics or outfits that restrict their movements. Comfy and familiar attire will help them feel at ease, resulting in more natural and authentic photos.

3. Be prepared with snacks and toys:

Toddlers have short attention spans, so having their favorite snacks and toys on hand can come to the rescue during your photoshoot. These can serve as fantastic motivators to keep them entertained and cooperative. Opt for snacks that are not too messy (such as crackers or small cookies) and toys that grab their attention without being too distracting. By incorporating interactive props, I can engage with your toddler, encouraging genuine smiles and expressions that truly reflect their personality.

4. Plan for breaks:

Toddlers can quickly become overwhelmed or lose interest in being the center of attention. Plan for regular breaks during the photoshoot to give them time to relax, recharge, and play. I like to use this opportunity to capture candid shots that showcase their unique personalities and them in their element. Allow them to explore the surroundings, but be sure to keep an eye on them at all times.

5. Involve them in the process:

Making your toddler feel involved and appreciated is key to a successful photoshoot. Before the session, talk to them about what's going to happen and let them participate in the decision-making process. Ask them for ideas, let them choose a prop or toy, and make them feel like they are contributing. This will not only make them feel special but also help them cooperate and enjoy the experience.

6. Be PATIENT:

It's essential to be flexible and patient when photographing a toddler. They have their own agenda and may not always cooperate with the typical posing cues. That's why I strive to create a relaxed atmosphere where they can explore and be themselves, allowing me to capture candid and heartwarming moments. Whether it's chasing bubbles, playing peek-a-boo, or capturing those spontaneous giggles, I aim to capture the genuine joy and love within the family dynamic; this means embracing the unpredictable nature of toddlerhood.

7. Consider an in-home session

Being at home allows your toddler to be much more comfortable because they will be in a familiar environment. Check out the blogs below for more tips and tricks AND details on why I LOVE in-home family photoshoots!

Remember, the primary goal of a photoshoot with a toddler is to capture genuine moments that reflect their unique spirit. Embrace their playful personality, be patient, and go with the flow. By following these tips, you'll be well-prepared to create beautiful memories that you and your family will cherish for years to come.
