POV: you’ve got a photo session planned and your weather app is calling for rain and grey skies all damn day. You’re wondering “should we just cancel or reschedule?” I’m here to tell you that embracing the rain might be worth it! Whether it's cuddling under an umbrella or jumping in puddles, the rain brings out a sense of playfulness and spontaneity that can result in joyful and authentic images. I’ve pulled together a list of my 6 best tips for embracing the rain!

1 — Embrace Rainy Day Attire

Instead of trying to fight against the rain, embrace it by choosing outfits that are suitable for the weather. Opt for elegant rain boots, colorful or clear umbrellas, and waterproof jackets. These accessories can not only keep you dry but also add a playful element to your photos. Or you could fully lean into the vibe and have a movie moment — don’t be afraid to get fully soaked with your love and dance in the rain!

2 — Location Choice

Work with your photographer to choose a location that complements the rainy weather. Scenic spots with lush greenery, covered bridges, or even urban environments can offer incredible backdrops that come alive in the rain. Consider locations with overhangs or architectural elements that can provide protection from the rain if needed.

3 — Positivity is Key

Attitude is everything! Embrace the rain with a positive mindset and see it as an opportunity to add a romantic and moody touch to your photos. Embrace the natural changes in lighting and be open to the creativity that the rain can inspire.

4 — Play with Props

Rain provides an excellent opportunity to incorporate props that can capture the essence of the weather. Consider bringing clear umbrellas, colorful raincoats, or even a vintage-looking umbrella to add an interesting element to your photos. Don't be afraid to get a little playful and have fun with it!

5 — Perfect Puddle Moments

Rain can create beautiful reflective surfaces, like puddles, that add depth and visual interest to your photos. Take advantage of these natural props and work with your photographer to capture stunning reflection shots. They can create a unique and artistic touch to your photoshoot. If you’re not afraid to get dirty, let’s get right down in there and splash in the puddles!

6 — Trust Your Photographer

Lastly, trust the professional you've hired to capture your memories. Photographers are experienced in making the most out of any weather conditions, including rain. They have a keen eye for artistic compositions and know how to use the rain to your advantage. Trust their guidance and know that they will help you create timeless and beautiful photos, rain or shine!

As a photographer, the soft, diffused light is hard to resist as it makes for truly the best lighting for outdoor portraits. Rainy day photos offer an opportunity to capture genuine and intimate moments and you can really have fun with it! It's the unexpected moments and the beauty of rain-soaked landscapes that make rainy day photoshoots a truly special and memorable experience for both the subjects and the photographer.

8 Tips for Photographers on How to Embrace the Rain at a Photoshoot

1 — Update Your Mindset:

Instead of feeling disappointed or frustrated about the rain, shift your mindset and see it as an opportunity to capture unique and memorable shots. Embrace the beauty and romanticism that rainy weather can add to your photos. Afterall, it’s my absolute favourite lighting for portraits!

2 — Choose the Right Location

Look for locations that have covered areas or interesting backdrops that can provide shelter from the rain. This could include beautiful architecture, bridges, or even open umbrellas as props.

3 — Take Advantage of Reflections

Rainy conditions can create stunning reflections that add depth and beauty to your photos. Look for puddles, wet streets, or bodies of water to use as creative elements in your composition.

4 — Bring Props

Consider incorporating colorful umbrellas, raincoats, or rain boots into your photoshoot. These props can not only add a fun and playful touch but can also help protect you or your clients from the rain.

5 — Add Lighting

Rainy days often come with softer and more diffused lighting, which can be especially flattering for portraits. However, if you find the lighting too dim, consider bringing external lighting sources like flash or reflectors to enhance the overall lighting conditions.

6 — Capture Candid Moments

Rainy weather tends to bring out genuine emotions and reactions. Encourage your clients to relax and enjoy the moment, capturing authentic connections and expressions. These candid shots can often become the most cherished and memorable images.

7 — Work with Raindrops

Use the raindrops creatively to enhance your compositions. Experiment with shallow depth of field to have raindrops in the foreground or capture the movement of raindrops falling using a slower shutter speed. These techniques can add a sense of motion and atmosphere to your images.

8 — Stay Prepared

Make sure to pack essential gear to protect your camera equipment from the rain. This includes camera rain covers, lens hoods, microfiber cloths, and waterproof bags. Also, consider bringing extra clothing, towels, and a portable heater to keep your clients comfortable during breaks.
Remember, embracing the rain during a photoshoot can create a unique and magical atmosphere that sets your images apart from traditional sunny day shots. Use these tips to make the most out of the rainy conditions and create stunning photos that your clients will treasure for a lifetime.

After these tips and tricks, you’re ready to head out with your clients and make some magic. You’ve got the opportunity to make some movie-like moments happen — let’s do it!
